Stanford University Holiday Schedule 2026 and 2027 (Staff Paid Holidays)

Stanford designates 10 paid holiday dates for eligible staff in the 2026-2027 cycle, published by the Benefits Office and governed by Administrative Guide Memo 2.1.13 (Paid Holidays policy, last updated January 1, 2022).

Two entries in this table shift because of Stanford’s holiday-observance rule (Administrative Guide Memo 2.1.13, Section 3): a holiday landing on a Saturday moves to the preceding Friday, and one landing on a Sunday moves to the following Monday.

Independence Day falls on Saturday, July 4, 2026, so it is observed Friday, July 3, 2026. It falls on Sunday, July 4, 2027, so it is observed Monday, July 5, 2027.

The same rule pushes both 2027 Winter Holidays one day earlier than the standard December 24–25 pattern, since December 25, 2027 falls on a Saturday.

Veterans Day (November 11) is not among Stanford’s paid staff holidays in either 2026 or 2027. It does not appear in the University Holiday Schedule published by the Benefits Office, and Stanford’s academic calendar does not list it as a no-instruction day.

Eligibility for Stanford Paid Holidays

Regular staff employees qualify for paid holidays starting on their first day of employment, provided they are scheduled to work at least 20 hours per week (50% FTE or greater).

To receive holiday pay, an employee must work or be on approved paid leave on the scheduled workday immediately before and immediately after the holiday.

Temporary and casual employees are not eligible for paid holidays or floating holidays. This eligibility structure does not apply to employees covered by SEIU Local 2007 or the Stanford Deputy Sheriffs’ Association collective bargaining agreements, who follow separate negotiated terms.

Floating Holidays Explained

Stanford credits regular, full-time staff employees with 16 hours of floating holiday time on January 1 of each calendar year (or on the date of hire, for employees starting after January 1). Part-time employees receive a prorated amount based on their regularly scheduled hours.

Floating holiday time can be taken on any day mutually agreed upon by the employee and supervisor within that calendar year, and up to a full year’s allotment can be borrowed early to help cover unpaid days during Winter Closure.

Stanford Holiday Pay Policy When a Holiday Falls on a Day Off

When a designated holiday falls on an employee’s regularly scheduled day off, the pay outcome depends on employment classification. Full-time exempt salaried staff receive another paid day off within the same calendar year, or, if scheduling is not feasible, 8 hours are added to their personal time off balance effective the following January 1.

Full-time non-exempt staff receive another paid day off, or, if that is not feasible, an extra day’s pay at 1.5 times the straight-time rate. This differs from what happens when an employee works on the holiday itself: non-exempt staff who work a holiday receive time-and-a-half pay plus either a substitute day off or 8 hours of extra pay.
