History of Mother’s Day

The modern Mother’s Day in the United States was founded by Anna Jarvis of Grafton, West Virginia, who campaigned for an official national day to honor mothers following the death of her own mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, on May 9, 1905.

Anna Jarvis organized the first official Mother’s Day service on May 10, 1908, at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia — the same church where her mother had taught Sunday school.

The church is now designated the International Mother’s Day Shrine and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Jarvis lobbied Congress and state governments for years. President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation on May 9, 1914, establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day — a national day of public expression of love and reverence for mothers.

Anna Jarvis later became bitterly opposed to the commercialization of the holiday, spending her later years and inheritance attempting to have it removed from the calendar. She died in 1948 in a sanitarium in West Chester, Pennsylvania, reportedly destitute.
