Michaelmas Term 2026

Michaelmas term for the 2026–2027 academic year runs from Monday, October 5, 2026, to Friday, December 11, 2026.

This is the first and typically the most academically intensive term of the year. It covers module introductions, initial assessments, and the majority of first-semester coursework.

The term spans 10 teaching weeks, ending approximately four weeks before Christmas.

Students arriving for the first time should plan to be on campus before Monday, September 28, 2026, when Welcome Week events begin.

Welcome Week and Arrivals: September 28, 2026

Welcome Week 2026 takes place from Monday, September 28, immediately before the new term begins.

The programme includes social events and fairs organised by individual colleges and the Lancaster University Students’ Union (LUSU), as well as introductions to specialist support services including the Library, Careers, and IT.

Lancaster University’s college system means all new students — including those living off campus — are expected to participate in Welcome Week activities throughout the full week.

College staff and Welcome Reps are present on campus throughout to assist with move-in logistics and initial orientation.

Lancaster operates 9 residential colleges: Bowland, Cartmel, County, Fylde, Furness, Grizedale, Lonsdale, Pendle, and Graduate College.

Summer term carries the primary examination period for undergraduate students. Taught content in this term is typically lighter than in Michaelmas or Lent, with the final weeks given over to formal assessments.

Lancaster University Graduation Dates 2026

Summer graduation ceremonies for 2026 take place from Monday, July 13, 2026, to Friday, July 17, 2026. These ceremonies cover undergraduate students and PhD award holders.

The full schedule runs across 15 ceremonies, with 3 ceremonies per day at 10:30, 13:45, and 16:30.

Graduation Ceremony Timetable 2026

Undergraduate students graduate by college, then by faculty, school, or department. Two student cohorts graduate outside the standard college structure: all students from Lancaster Medical School who completed an MBChB degree, and all students from Furness College (Barrow).

Note that the timetable distinguishes between Furness College (Barrow) — located in Barrow-in-Furness — and Furness College (Lancaster), based on the main Bailrigg campus.

PhD students graduate by faculty, then by school or department. A separate cohort exists for students from the University of Cumbria.

The four faculties referenced throughout the timetable are: Faculty of Health and Medicine (FHM), Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (FHASS), Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), and Lancaster University Management School (LUMS).
